7 things to look for in a storage solution

When you want to sign up for a storage solution there’s so much conflicting information out there that it can be hard to know which way to turn. To keep things nice and simple — just as they should be — we’ve put together everything you need to look out for.

All-weather protection for your valuables

If you want to store vehicles, gardening equipment, documents, or anything else that will take a turn for the worst when exposed to the elements, you need to look for all-weather protection. The storage company will be able to tell you about the ability of their units to withstand the weather, so make sure you ask them. You could also pop in to check for anything obvious like leaks if you want to put your mind at ease.

Fully insured premises

Whilst you won’t necessarily be able to have the storage company’s insurers foot the bill to cover everything inside your unit, you do want to make sure their accreditations and paperwork are up to date. Any reputable storage provider will welcome your questions, so don’t be shy about asking them for everything you need.

A reputation that gets plenty of word of mouth referrals

Online reviews are all well and good, but there’s really no substitute for using a service that comes recommended by one of your friends, colleagues, or neighbours. Give yourself peace of mind by listening to that all-important social proof and you’ll sleep all the better for it.

24/7 secure access

One of the key selling points of storage is ease of access. Look for somewhere that offers 24-hour access as standard, and check you’re happy with the security access. Is there a manned front desk? Do you have a unique pin code or key to enter? These kinds of questions will get you the answers you need.

Well lit premises that put you at ease

You never know when you might need access to your stuff, and the last thing you want is to have to find your way around a facility that’s poorly lit. Find somewhere that’s quick and convenient to navigate and it will make the difference on the day you move a lot stuff in or out.

Suitable vehicle access

It’s no use hiring a unit to store industrial equipment if you have to park 200 yards away. Find somewhere where you can pull up directly outside and unload everything there and then. It will make more of a difference than you think, and your back will certainly thank you for it later.

Remote surveillance or onsite security

You want to know that your prized possessions are safe at all times, so make sure to check out the security measures that are in place. Some facilities have onsite security to compliment the remote surveillance they offer. If you want to know that someone is always keeping an eye on your unit this could be well worth a closer look.
